James Island Middle School Director of Bands:     Angelia Cartwright

            Ms. Angelia D. Cartwright is a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky where she graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Music Education.  Ms. Cartwright also holds a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.  During her studies at Notre Dame, Ms. Cartwright studied trumpet with William Scarlett, co-principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony, and was a Graduate Assistant Director of the Fighting Irish Marching Band, as well as a featured soloist with the touring Concert Band and University Orchestra.   

Ms. Cartwright has been teaching in the Charleston County School District for the last seven years as a Middle School Band Director at Alice Birney Middle School in North Charleston, where she was named Teacher of the Year for 2002-2003.  The bands at Alice Birney enjoyed growth and musical success during Ms. Cartwright’s tenure, earning consistent Excellent and Superior ratings at various festivals in and around South Carolina.  Ms. Cartwright taught in the Berkeley County School District for two years at Sedgefield Middle School, where the bands earned the Outstanding Performance Award both years.  During those two years, the SMS Bands also placed high numbers of students in the All State, Region, and County Honor Bands. 

Ms. Cartwright’s professional affiliations include the South Carolina Band Directors’ Association, Music Educators’ National Conference, and Charleston County Band Directors’ Association, of which she has held an office for the last 4 years.  She has performed in various groups in the Charleston area including the Low Country Winds, the Charleston Wind Ensemble, and the Southcoast Symphony.
